Tag 15: Kupplungszug III, Gaszug II

Spielfrei, ohne Widerstand... einfach perfekt!

Day 15: Clutch cable III, throttle cable II

Et voilá: ALL real technical hurdles have been overcome, the actual conversion has been completed. A real reason for joy!

First of all the clutch cable. By combining several parts we managed a similar u-turn as with the throttle cable: The clutch cable of the T3 brings its own tubing, which we grinded in the front and immersed into the bulkhead in such a way that it was visually acceptable. Flanged at that spot, a clutch cable tube of a Beetle fits nicely, and both combined we managed a 180° turn. No kinks or bends.  The transmission tunnel provides enough space for all sorts of tubes and levers...fits as well. The cable itself is too long, thus useable. Shortened with an adaptor kit for Buggys with a short chassis it fits like it was made for it. No play, no resistance, simply perfect. THIS is a real moment of happiness. Thanks a lot Lothar, for the terrific idea!
The fitting of the throttle cable had already been solved at an earlier stage, all we needed to do was to fasten the guide pipe with suitable clamps. Those were already lying around, left over from the refitting of the fuel pipes on the ´57 sunroof

Well done at low cost.

Wirklich.

That means from now on all we have to do is metal work and the engine overhaul. It's going well, really.

Tag 14: Kupplungszug II

Day 14: Clutch cable II

Another short day...but effective. The clutch problem that we kept putting off has been solved; at least the difficult part: The one in the luggage compartment.
We knew that this would be a bigger operation and that the clutch cable out of a T3-Bus would not fit without adjustment, so we went through the trouble and cut a window into the water tank. No, we don't want to get wet feet... but it won't get closed straight away, though. Later.

Morgen vielleicht.

For the ball end of the cable we simply welded a nut to the pedal lever...it fits. Now we need to lay the pipe into the rear and cut it down to the exact measure...maybe tomorrow.

Tag 13: Hinterachse I, Kupplungszug I, Tieferlegung vorn

Day 13: Rear axle I, clutch cable I, front lowering

A short day, but still. First surprise: The rear break drums were secured with screws from a DIY store. Unbelievable. Second, this time nice, surprise: The rest of the break is largely complete, dry and useable.

Wie dafuer gemacht: Die Antriebswellen vom VW Kaefer passen perfekt. Keine Laengenprobleme.

Like it was made for it: The drive shafts of the VW Beetle fit perfectly. No problem with length.

Recently we had a trial fitting of the rims: We agreed that the car needs to come down a bit. As afore mentioned, our compromise for ground clearance was about walnut-size. We're working on it... a bit. We will force it after painting the body.

Not illustrated: The guide tube for the front clutch cable guides is welded to the body. As soon as we have the clutch cable we can cut the pipe to length at the undercarriage and fasten it. Slowly but surely the project is taking shape.

Tag 12: Tankdeckel, Tankeinbau, Gaszug

Fertig.

Day 12: Fuel cap, fuel chamber installation, throttle cable

4 hours in a row...a chance to really get something done.

First of all we needed to close the now redundant opening at the rear back side. That was relatively easily done with the caps intended for the US-Sidemarkers of Ralfs Martini 924, which weren't going to be used anymore.

Doof. Also strukturelle Veraenderungen.

The Beetle fuel tank which is now located in the former engine compartment fits nearly perfectly between the side rails of the Porsche...nice. Unfortunately too far in the front, where it would get in the way of the lighting mechanics. So it needs to go further back....if the support of the steel struts wouldn't be there already. Damn. Structure needs to be changed. After a quick shortening and resealing with lids, everything is stable again and looks good on top. The fuel chamber fits. The finishing touches were made by applying a cross brace under the rear edge of the fuel chamber...done too!

And then there was the throttle cable, which needed to go further back...
thankfully the engineers at Porsche have used an unbelievably flexible cable, that makes it possible to do a u-turn without increasing resistance too much or making it too sluggish. We fastened it with a hook at the bulkhead, now we only need the guide tube to the rear. That should be done next time...again we're making progress!

Tag 11: Schaltung komplett, Raeder

Gut.

Day 11: Gearshift assembly completed, Wheels
Finally...we're moving on

The shift rod we already prepared last year is now ready to be built in, thanks to a parts donation (gear lever housing and shift rod coupling) of Sebastian Loll: It nearly fitted straight away too. At 23cm shorter than the original part it is now integrated into the project and started working without any problems. The opening for the gear lever housing looks like it was intended this way too; the gear stick bag of the Porsche fits bang on into the cuff of the 64s gear stick - or was it the other way round? - Anyway, it looks chic. And works. Good.

Then there were the wheels...unbelievable, that this thin rubber coat could be convinced to fit onto the rims...but: The fitting worked straight away - even though it looked like the tires were about to burst a couple of times. Anyhow: No damage during fitting. Perfectly balanced. All is good. A big thank you to Uli of Auto-Service Nord in Dortmund for letting us use his machines!!
